What’s in a name

Naming our farm was far more difficult than we anticipated. Having played in multiple bluegrass and country bands through the years, we knew from experience that a name can make you or make you have regrets. We had several ideas for the farms namesake, many tied to our location and story. I'll share a few with you that didn't make the cut-- Grass Strings Farm, named for our meats being pasture raised and our love of bluegrass music. We also thought County Line Farm, seeing we live on the Monongalia and Preston line. Others receiving honorable mention include; Ham and Acres, The Pike Farm, and The Rice Farm, we ultimately decided none of the names were a good idea as they would corner us into the Hog, Fish and a Rice market.

We both agreed that location was very important to us; we wanted to be grounded in our community and have our boys a place to call home. Pike Mountain Farm was the winner for a few reasons. We live on the Kingwood Pike, often referred to as "The Pike" to locals. This community along with the area just down the road where Tyler grew up is also referred to as "The Mountain" by locals, the pictures below will give you a perspective of Morgantown you might not have experienced yet. The first is taken from Breakiron Hill Road and the other at Nicholson Chapel.

Once we established the name it was time to work up a logo and brand style. Nick Tankersly, a personal friend from back home in Beckley, is known for his art- we immediately fell in love with his style. We sent photos and ideas of the farm and Nick did the rest! I encourage you to take a look at Nick's website www.ndtank.com-- his prints are so beautiful and can be made into just about anything; tshirts, tapestrys, wall art and much more. He is also launching a new company in 2017- an Appalachia wilderness inspired apparel and goods store-- follow him on twitter @lostappalachia.

In other news- the skid steer and post driver made it to the farm this weekend. A big thanks to our friends Chris and Amanda Brown over at Brown Cow Farms for letting us use their trailer.
